Task 2: Produce rapid prototypes, test, and iterative designs
Week 6
meeting with group
- Continuous, use main 1 mascot
- For Lid, two patterns, with a mascot or image
- Continuous
- Minimum design
The left one will be used as the main mascot for the packaging
These are references to continuous illustration, making it simple
Voting
There are packaging drafts. Business school students mentioned base
color is blue and white. At first, I created blue background packaging
but it was not really good it did not look like delicious ice cream,
and hard to see words. Also, I put an outline but when I removed it,
it looked better. So I created a white background + without a line
version.
After that, I received the mascot ai file so I applied them, I also
tried three flavor versions.
Week 7
we asked some questions to tbs, and then the group leader met with
them, we received answers and some requests, changing points &
parts. All ingredient lists are finalized, except
for Raspberry Basil (they need to substitute egg in their recipe) No Halal mark is required yet, use “Pork-free” as a
placeholder.
There are some requests and suggestions for packaging:
Based on that, we decided to put the oat milk ice cream mascot in
front of the packaging, so we will not use a flavor mascot for
packaging. Then I changed the packaging design. I also used Jiayee's
mascot AI files for the final one.
We had a meeting with TBS students. Based on the TBS student's
request, we created one more pattern of packaging.
Jiayee created a new layout based on the upper sketch image. They
preferred this layout. Because they said it looks
like Haagen-Dazs.
Also, I tried to find a good background color other than white, but it
was a bit hard to find a good combination between the background and
flavor color. I used white, light cream colors, and gradient colors
for the background.
Based on references, I added nutrition facts, an ingredients list, a
non-pork mark, a phrase that explains flavor, a flavor mascot, a QR
code, and a social media account.
Meeting with the group:
I will create a new logo, using font relate and oat. And have to do
continuous illustration. I didn't come up with good ideas so we found
some references. And have to keep it simple.
We decided on a slogan.
Sketch of logo, I will follow the top one.
I created three patterns
And applied to packaging, how it looks like
And then I asked group members to vote. Our final decision is idea 3.
Week 8
Packaging size: W - 226.08 mm H - 57 mm
After receiving the Ai file, I started to create the final packaging, I
needed to add benefits, marks, a nutrition list, an ingredient list, a
description of the product, etc. The upper image is a sample from TBS
students.
Created some marks based on the mood board.
It was hard to put a lot of information into limited space since this
is ice cream cup packaging.
After that, I added plant-based marks, recycling, and barcode. The
below image is the final layout except for continuous
illustration.
Ice cream cup lid design. I just changed the flavor name.
Continuous illustration:
Since we don't have time, we don't have enough space for packaging, and
we have to make it simple. I have another idea but it could be clearer,
so based on Jiayee's opinion, I created a continuous illustration of
empty space.
Flavor mascots are catching oats.
I added flavor color to the oats. I tried to make it a simple layout. It
was a bit difficult to think about the layout of it.
After that, I got a new ingredients list from TBS students so I added
them. And three flavor names were changed.
Week 10
In week 10, we did a presentation and I received feedback that the oat illustration was too realistic, so created
two patterns based on that. One is to keep the structure the same
and only change the shape of the oat. I made it simpler.
Next pattern, I changed the layout and made the oat illustration
rounded.
This is the mock-up store that uses actual products. I could not go
there because I have class, but I would like to try someday.
Final packaging:

EXPERIENCE
I gained very valuable experience through this task. It was a great
experience to communicate with actual clients and to form groups with
other prior students and work together on the task. I was the only
graphics student and was a bit nervous at first because there were many
tasks related to graphics content, but Jiayee helped me in many ways. I
hope to use my experience here for future internships and future
modules.
Observation
I enjoyed listening to the other groups' presentations. I still thought
that the art direction, which is the very first decision, is very
important. I thought it was great that both the roti group and the
bamboo water bottle group came up with ideas that were well-aed with a
lot of thought.
Findings
We looked for many reference images in creating the package. It was
especially difficult to think about the nutritional list, the
characteristics of the product, and how to place the many marks sno...
There were also many different types of ice cream cup layouts. I found a
reference to a package that incorporated the branding of that brand in
that area as well, which I thought was very nice.
