Term: Mark

By itself, it only means an impression made on something, paper, wall, wood, etc. Combined with other words, they can be a trademark, a farm mark, a printer's mark, a furniture mark, and so on. They also represent the quality, ability, and skill level of the creator, and thus promise excellence.

Week 1

Task 2(B)

Produce 2 sheets of idea sketches weekly for the development of your logo.

Use mind maps to identify important keywords or key visuals. Develop these into idea sketches and then later into concepts.

Fig2.3: introduction to task 2

1> Your career/business

1. Dessert cafe

2. Tea master, tea shop

3. Travel agency

2> What service(s) / product(s) are you providing?

1. Parfait, shaved ice, cake, donut, etc. store

2. Tea shop

3. Support for customer travel

3> How do you differentiate yourself from others? (uniqueness of career)

1. Create unique and exciting (but delicious) pastries.

2. Lots of customization, teas from various countries

3. For a comfortable trip.

4> Who will be interested with your product(s) or service(s)?

1. Someone who likes sweets, the young generation, girls

2. Someone who likes tea, all generations? (I have an image of elderly people preferring tea)

3. Travellers or tourists

5> Name & Rationale

1.  Fruits Park(cuz there are so many fruits in parfait & shaved ice), Happiness(I feel happy when I eat this), Blissful bites or time ( Same as happiness, but the name of happiness is simple to change the word and I need to decide bites or time. Bites has potential.)

2. Cha Cha Cha(sounds good), cha means tea. I think it has an impact.

3. The Unknown World (Meaning that even if tourists and travelers have visited a place once, my brand can convey a new attraction)

Final decision: ”Blissful Bites”

Week 2

I created a mind map of the brand's name and the brand's business. Use mind maps to identify important keywords and key visuals. Develop them into idea sketches and then into concept sketches. Narrow down the most promising ideas and concepts.

Mind map: Brand name

Fig3.1: mindmap, brand name

Mind map: Business

Fig3.2: mindmap, business

Week 3

I came up with 20 websites for my own brand and sketched them out. I then received feedback from my classmates and Ms. Lilian.

Fig4.1: references

My brand is aimed at the younger generation that likes desserts, so I tend to use cute illustrations and pop fonts.

Fig4.2-3: week 3 sketches

Week 4

Based on last week's feedback, I created 25 sketches. Some remain the same, and some have been changed. The first sketch had the brand name on everything. There are only wordmark logos. So I created a new logo mark.

Fig5.1: week 4 sketch

Idea rough sketch of combined bear & mouth.

Fig5.2: combine mouth and bear

In the week 5 class, I received feedback from Ms. Lilian. She mentioned you need to remove the mouth because it looks like the bear is holding a mirror. Since it is a polar bear, I think just a scarf will suffice.

Fig5.3: digitalization of mark sketch

Week 5 Feedback

- Remove the mouth (it looks like a mirror)
- Add scarf
- Find font
- Decied font position
- Use grid

So I changed my idea, the new idea is to compose a brand font under the face of a bear wearing a scarf.

Fig6.1: bear face

First, I found our favorite face and finalized my decision. Then I adjusted it using the guide. Fig6.4 is the final outcome.

Fig6.3: face options, guide

Fig6.2: use guides

Fig6.4: final face outcome

Ears = same size
Cheek = same size
Eyes & nose dot = same size
Face & nose = enlarge and reduce

Fig6.5: parts size

I thought about putting the font down or to the side. Tried many different fonts and chose the one that fit. And tried three scarf options. I thought font 5 is suitable.

Fig6.6: font positioning and logo shape options

Fonts from -

Week 6 Feedback

- The No. 3 typeface is suitable but you can try No.1 and decide
- The scarf is ok 1 or 2
- Having a body is better
- 5-7 typefaces are not suitable
- Lettering typeface(?) is interesting
- Blue background is okay pink one is not good
- Emphasis bear's cheek

Fig7.1: with body, without body

I decied with body, because I don't like space between scalf and logo. And with body  optio has a good whole balance.

Fig7.2: fonts

I decided left font. Ms. Lilian also mentioned left one is better. It's suitable for bear shape.

Fig7.3: color dicision

Fig7.4: color pallete

I found winter color palette and chose image above. I tried some patterns and decide blu background one. Also emphasise bear's cheeck.

I made animation by After Effect, and export by Media Encoder. Befor create, prepare some png files. It was difficult to think of the movements.

Feedback

Week 2

Bites have more impact than time. Business mind maps need to be considered as well. Mind maps can go off-topic. It helps with ideas.

Week 3

The word "bites" is in there, but the illustration with the teeth showing seems a bit aggressive. There are lots of fonts and marks that could be combined.

Week 4

The idea of a bear, B & ice cream, mouth, and cake is a good idea. Whether you want to go with the cute type or if you want to choose the mouth and express the name of the brand in the logo. What I would like to do. Combine the bear and the mouth.

Week 5

Need to remove the mouth because it looks like the bear is holding a mirror. Since it is a polar bear, I think just a scarf will suffice. I'll look for the right font and place it, using a grid. Try different line sizes.

Week 6

The No. 3 typeface is suitable but you can try No.1 and decide, having a body is better. The blue background is okay pink one could be better. Emphasis bear's cheek

Reflections

Experience

In this task, we created our own brand. It was especially difficult to make 25 sketches. At first, I only came up with about 10 ideas, so I had to search for lots of references. Creating the logo was fun. It was hard to use the grid well. However, I feel that using grids improved the quality of the logo. Fonts exist too many to count, so finding the right one was hard but fun.

Observation

It was interesting to see the work of classmates. It was amazing that so many different meanings were included in one mark. It was fun to see other logo ideas for the same brand.

Findings

As Mr. Lilian mentioned, I realized the importance of mind mapping. When creating a logo, I needed to consider many things such as purpose, target, and features. In those processes, mind maps helped me a lot. The logo analysis in task 2a also gave me a new insight into the meaning of logos that I am used to seeing. I also looked into logo evaluation and found many brands that have undergone major changes. I thought it was wonderful that people created such memorable logos with many meanings and messages.
