Instructions
Lecture
Week 1
⚫︎Culture and design are inseparable. Understanding and expressing both
is essential for designers to enhance their creativity.
⚫︎As technology and society evolve, designers are increasingly faced
with the challenge of expressing their creativity in a beautiful and
relevant message.
⚫︎It takes research as well as skill, intuition, and creativity.
⚫︎Research allows us to gather more data, visualize the project, and
process it into important information that can be used to properly
convey the message and ensure the design is perceived in the right tone.
⚫︎Research allows us to identify the social, cultural, and political
spheres in which design elements exist.
Design systems... A pyramid-like structure
|
| Design system |
Through design systems, we can learn about their graphic significance
in cultural studies, philosophy, sociology, and history of
origins.
Research should be done at all stages of the project:
- Before proposal development
- After proposal development
- During the creation of the artwork
Secondary Findings ... Data is collected through publications or existing resources, such as research papers, documentaries, or existing design sources used as inspiration.
Week 2
Heraldry... Used in the Middle Ages to identify knights and royalty, it is still prevalent today in schools and organizations around the world and is expressed in their heraldry.
⚫︎Historically, heraldry adorned flags, shields, and armor.
⚫︎They are created by heralds appointed by the sovereigns of nations.
⚫︎Armies can distinguish between friend and foe in battle.
The basic components of heraldry:
- shield
- motto
- mantle
- helmet
- supporter
In Malaysia, the majority of public and private school emblems are based on heraldic designs. (Forms associated with educational institutions)

<Culture, design, and research>
Culture and design are inseparable, and as future designers, you
need to be able to understand and express both as part of the development
of your creative skills
Task > Working as a group, determine culturally driven basic
assumptions or artifacts and products for your artwork project’s
topic.
Present our chosen cultures/sub-cultures verbally or through PowerPoint
slides in group meetings.

Week 2
The ideas were chosen to be Han Fu, Norse Mythology, and Graffiti, and
slides were compiled with ideas, overviews, rationals, research problems,
questions, and objects. Then received feedback from Miss Ismail.
1st Feedback:
Topics are very broad. What is the cultural significance of these topics?
Rectify this, and yes, you can supplement your initial research with your
idea sketches.
Week 3
The graffiti topic changed to Chinese Architecture. Again, we created
slides that included an overview, rationale, research problem, objective,
and questions. I then received a second round of feedback from Miss Ismail.
2nd feedback:
Idea 1 Hanfu Movement Culture: Interesting, but the research
provided does not give an idea of what the clothing signifies within the
movement. Good context research, little input on how to push the idea as a
project.
Idea 2 Viking Longships: A promising idea where you can look at how
the design aspect of the boat signifies different functions of the boats
[...tough enough to sustain pressure... while maintaining lightweight
nature]. But, apart from function, the visual study that signifies cultural
importance needs to be improved. Provide a rationale for your proposed
project output.
Idea 3 Traditional Chinese Archi. Culture: The strongest promising
idea with plenty of cultural inputs [...see architecture that is deeply
related to various aspects of a country]. Suggest that you work with
ideation #2 where you look at different temples around Selangor and do a
cross-study of the design inspiration from a different location in
China.
After the meeting, we decided on Chinese architecture. Then we proposed the
idea. After proposing the idea, we made a sketch of the idea.
Data Collection
- Explore various designs of temples around KL/ Selangor with
inspiration from
- Analyse its unique characteristics and inspiration from locations in
China/ which dynasty
Outcome Ideation

Week 4
After finishing the proposal presentation, we gave proposal
feedback.
|
| Fig1.9: proposal feedback |
Based on feedback, we found ideas again, and collect them in the Miro board
for each member. Website, cartoon figure, postcard, etc. After this, we had
a meeting and decided on the idea. we decided cartoon figure.

Data collection
We started data collection
Confirmed temples:
(Site visit) Thean Hou Temple - https://www.hainannet.com.my/
(Online research) Chin Swee Caves Temple - https://www.chinswee.org/
(Online research) Cheng Hoon Teng Temple - http://www.chenghoonteng.org.my/
(Site visit, done) Kwan Imm Temple Klang
Got new feedback
"Interesting concept of translating cultural visuals into a character
design. carry on with this."
Two people per temple collected data. Photos taken during the actual visit
were also used.
Week 6
As a result of the feedback we received once again, we changed it from a
figure to a Chinese lantern. Applying inspiration from the temple to
the base design of lanterns, windows, roofs, ornaments, and
patterns. We thought this idea would be a good representation of
Chinese architectural culture.
And proceed a data collection. This is a document of data collection.
Final project
After this, we move on to the final artwork. Research, sketches, illustrations, and poster design. We decided on the
division of roles. I was in charge of sketching and illustration.
Week 7
Out of three sketches, we decided on this one.
|
| Fig3.1: a sketch of a lantern |
List of features:
1. fiery design on tip of the temple, inspired by hong san ti.
2. double layered roof design, inspired by Chin Swee caves pagoda style
building.
3. top roof design with mythical creatures, inspired by Thean Hou's
roof design
4. blue and yellow patterns, inspired by Kwan Imm temple klang's
ceiling designs.
5. bottom roof edge design, inspired by Thean Hou's roof design.
6. window design 1 - dragon, a symbolic creature in Chinese culture,
found in most Chinese temples.
7. window design 2 - phoenix carving, inspired by Kwan Imm temple
klang
8. stone carved lions as legs of the lantern, the symbolic creature in
Chinese culture, also seen at Kwan Imm temple klang
|
| Fig3.2: sketch of the lantern with exploration |
Based on this sketch, we first created the shape of the base of the
lantern using Ai.
|
| Fig3.3: base shape and color |
After this, Illustrators added details and shadows. On the window of
the lantern, we put a dragon and a phoenix. These are familiar with
Chinese culture. In addition to that, we will add tiles and patterns.

Finally, details, lantern light, and background were added to complete
the project. The collected data was used to design a vector illustration prototype of
a traditional Chinese, incorporating design elements and features of
Chinese architecture.

Feedback
Idea 1 Hanfu Movement Culture:
Interesting, but the research provided needs to give an idea of what the

Idea 2 Viking Longships:
A promising idea where you can look at how the design aspect of the boat
signifies different functions of the boats [...tough enough to sustain
pressure... while maintaining lightweight nature]. But, apart from
function, the visual study that signifies cultural importance is very
lacking. Provide a rationale for your proposed project output.
Idea 3 Traditional Chinese Archi. Culture:
The strongest promising idea with plenty of cultural inputs [...see

Suggest that you work with ideation #2 where you look at different temples
around Selangor and do a cross-study of the design inspiration from a
different location in China.
Proposal:
⚫︎More creativity in the ideas, not so direct
⚫︎Dont take the info and put it into another form
⚫︎What is the significance of all our ideas and how does it connect back
to the topic of Chinese Architecture?
⚫︎Suggests that she wants the design elements taken from Chinese
architecture and incorporate into our ideas hence, the theme
“Visualism”.
⚫︎Visualize the culture instead of educating using it.
⚫︎None of us are from China, what is the exciting part of the
architecture from Msia & China?
⚫︎What are the similarities and differences between both architectural
designs?
⚫︎Do something that will reflect on the culture itself (e.g when someone
looks at our final outcome, they will know right away that the object
represents something from that culture)
Reflection
At first, it took us a long time to decide on a culture and on an idea. This caused us to progress slower than the other groups. However, I was very happy when we were able to decide on a final idea based on feedback from the teacher and members. From then on, we decided on our roles. We finished the final artwork in one week, but we cooperated and helped each other even if we were not in roles for the hard parts. Thanks to that, we were able to proceed smoothly.
We also had several meetings throughout the project. On a personal reflection, I think we should have spoken up more often in meetings. If there is another group project like this, I would like to improve.
For data collection, we actually visited temples and took pictures. Unlike images on the Internet, we were able to take pictures up close, and these photos were very helpful in creating the final product. Through this project, we also gained a deeper understanding of Chinese architecture and culture.
Overall, I believe that the members of the team were able to work together on the project, each taking advantage of their own areas of expertise. I enjoyed watching the presentations by the other groups because there were so many great ideas. I would like to make use of the experiences and ideas I gained here in the future.
