Exercise 3, 4 & 5, Project 2

Exercise3: Kinetic typography

In week 2 class, learned about kinetic typography. After-effects were used and created to match the lyrics. It was difficult because it is an up-tempo song. Incorporating various animations.

I watched this tutorial video. I used my name for some animations. It was interesting to see how moving a few keyframes can change the movement so much.

Exercise 4: Motion graphic chart

Create motion graphics, pie charts, and bar charts and move them around. This is the first time I've used something called a time path.

Fig3.1: time path

A bar graph was created. The colors were changed for clarity. After that, I added numbers and titles and staggered the timing of each bar.

Exercise 5: Vector/character animation

Fig4.1: separate the layer

Separate the parts of the character that I want to move and the parts that I want to fix. Decide to move the face, wrists, and arms.

Fig4.2: position, scale, rotation

When you create, be careful about position, scale, and rotation. The body movements of each character were also shifted, not at the same time.

Fig4.4: move an anchor point

Anchor points are important when creating motion graphics. In this animation, The sun was shown climbing up and the shadows of the trees were moved at the same time. Clouds come out from below and bounce. Windmill (?) also rotates.

Project 2: Kinetic Typography

Week 1

For Week 1, we decided on a song; we had two rounds of voting. We submitted several potential songs and voted on them. Finally, we chose the one with the cleanest lyrics. Two songs remained, but we chose the up-tempo song.

Week 2

Members suggested typography art-style ideas on the miro board. Many of the opinions were space, the 80s, and the 90s retro.

Finally, we decided on this song.

Dua Lipa - Levitating

Based on the finalized song, we again came up with ideas for the style of mv. Style options, color scheme options, type options.

The type option was chosen from among the style options. We did not just choose what we liked or what was good but chose to balance each other.

Week 3

Next, we came up with typographic ideas. I typed part of the lyrics into Google Fonts and picked what I thought was good.

Fig5.8: typography ideas

Our group leader then selected a few from the whole group. On the left is a distinctive type and on the right is a normal typo. We chose from both and made our final decision.

Fig5.9: connect them, look balanced

We finally settled on these styles, color palettes, and typo faces.

Fig5.10: the confirmed overall style

This is a lyric decomposition (Dua Lipa-Levitating) There are 8-12 lines per person.

Next, each member creates own draft. I used these videos as references. Since this is kinetic typography, we took into account the meaning of the lyrics.

Week 4

This is my first draft process and video. I took into account the balance of colors and typo faces for each part. I used the neon-like typo of Yeah, which was shared by a member of the group.

Uploaded draft to drive. Then I submitted it. After getting feedback, I decided to reduce one typo face type. Then we re-created it.

Week 5

Finally, we decided on a background Option 1 is a blue background, which makes the typo face hard to see. However, the movement of the stars was well received. The other is a black background with very good star movement. We decided on option 2.

Week 6

Received feedback from Mr.Martin and decided to remove the Big fat(typo). Then we made the final adjustments, did the background transparency, turned off the sound, and sent the file to the group leader. The leader added the background and connected the members' files. The below video is the final outcome.

Reflections

Project 2 was group work. We had several meetings. We divided up roles and were able to proceed as planned. Creating the draft was hard work, but when I saw the finished product with everyone's connections, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I think we were able to create a work that was in line with the lyrics and concept of the music. Text animation is very difficult. It would be nice to have more variety of expressions.
