Lecture

Week 1

In week1 class, Mr Martin briefed  about this module outline and we practiced editing video by using Adobe Premire Pro. I used it for the first time, but it used like to after effect.

Week 2

⚫︎Earliest Cinema
When the motion picture camera was invented; the shots were simple and straightforward. The filmmakers turned to dramatic presentations they called filmed plays.

⚫︎Cinematography

*Motion picture/Film/Video is made up of many shots.
*Each shot requires placing the camera in the best position for that particular moment in the narrative.
*Shot is continuous view shot by one camera without interruption.
*The sequence is a series of scenes, or shots, complete in itself.
*The scene defines the place or setting where the action is laid.
*A scene may consist of a series of shots or sequences depicting a continuous event.

⚫︎Shot size

*Extreme wide shot
Wide shot
*Medium wide shot
Medium shot
Medium close-up shot
Close-up shot
*Extreme close-up shot

⚫︎Camera angle

Composition: The rule of thirds divides the frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The points where the vertical and horizontal lines cross are aesthetically pleasing spots to place subjects or to have perspective lines converge.

⚫︎screen direction

Dynamic Screen Direction: Constant screen travel depicts subject motion in one direction only . A series of shots of a person walking, a car driving, a plane flying – should move in the same direction to show progression.

Static Screen Direction: When planning shots with two characters, you need to understand the camera movement in relation to the 180º rule. The rule enforces the camera stay on a horizontal axis and not cross sections so that it will disorient the viewer. The horizontal axis is called “ Line of Action”

Week 1: Editing Exercise

We learned how to use Premiere Pro. 1st one is a food commercial and 2nd one is a short movie but the order is not correct, I had to rearrange them in the correct order. The 2nd one was a funny short movie.

Week 2: Framing shooting exercise

⚫︎Shoot a wide shot with a wide angle.
⚫︎The rest ZOOM IN to get the soft background.
⚫︎Refer to the examples provided or google references for GOOD composition.
⚫︎Avoid overexposed or underexposed (too bright or too dark).
⚫︎Do the shooting during day time.
⚫︎Shoot landscape format video, 5 seconds per shot.
⚫︎Edit with CAPTION (Mention the shot size), and export video for submission.

Watch Munich

Fig1.8: Munich

⚫︎Almost no bgm, but disturbing music in the flashback scene
⚫︎Put that music in places where there is a calm atmosphere
⚫︎Good use of silence and scenes with music
⚫︎There was a lot of tense music
⚫︎There were many scenes where bgm was played without video sound.

Week1: Task

*Watch Stop motion short video
*Shortlist 3 Stop motion video
*Explain the reasons for being chosen (style, art direction, character design, etc)

Fig2.1:  Stop motion of putting makeup on a friend who ate ramen and slept

This video is a Stop motion of putting makeup on a friend who ate ramen and slept. The reason why I chose this video is that I like this video's atmosphere. Especially, characters and sound effects are so good. The character is cute, and her appearance is getting better because of makeup.

Fig2.2

I like that even the sounds of removing the caps of cosmetics and applying the cosmetics are reproduced in detail. The movements of the cosmetics are also detailed and fun to watch. It was interesting to see the blinking and the mouth moving in stop motion. I also like the structure of the return to the original form at the end.

Fig2.3: "Crazy office worker's night meal"

This video is a Stop motion of Despair office worker's midnight snack. This video has had so many views that I was curious to see it, and I was convinced by the number of views. This video is a motion video of cooking by a fired office worker. This is not just cooking movies, meal ingredients are his clothes and bags. This idea is interesting and amazing.

Fig2.4: sushi

Foe example, He cut up suits and ties to make them look like fish, the cotton of his clothes like rice, and made sushi out of them. Leather shoes and smartphones were cut with knives like real foodstuffs. It would be very difficult to film these things and create a motion video.

Fig2.5: cutting

I thought the cooking idea was great besides taking & making videos. It was fun to watch him make so many dishes with everyday items.

Fig2.6: "奇妙な水のCM"

This video is a Stop motion of Strange water ads. I chose this video because I like the overall beauty and fantasy of it. There are many qualities that can only be expressed in stop motion. Especially when filling a cup with water, the characteristic movement of water is represented. I also like the sound very much. Marbles and glasses (?) were shining like real seaside water. I also like the camera work because it is very powerful.

Week 3: 3-act structures - Lalin, Guang

Week 5: Storyboard

Storyboarding =Visualization

When the scene has a complicated action involved or few perspective points of view, the storyboard is the most effective way to map out the scene.

Purpose of storyboard

#Show important action
#Shot composition
#Indicate camera angle/movement
#Map out the scene

Do story breakdown / Get shot list ready for storyboarding

Use the floor plan to make out the camera position

Camera angles for each sequence can be indicated in floor plan. Sc/sh numbers are written beside the camera symbol.
