Lecture

First, I watched the video that I can know how to create task 2 . After watching the video, I tried to draw a sketch of some layouts and draw sketches of text designs. In this task, we need to use Illustrator and In design.

Instructions

First of all, I thought of some sketches and then I made a text design using illustrator. I choose "visualise for a visible world". It was a little bit difficult to think of an attractive design for it. In this step, I could not come up with satisfying ideas.

Fig2.1: idea sketch

I though I would like to emphasis 'better' and 'world' particularly. So I create some designs that emphasized two words.

In week 6 class, I received some feedbacks from teacher. Mr Vinod said, emphasis on something is not an idea. And my almost work just emphasized word of better or world.

Fig2.5: feedback

And my first layout, I emphasized three things as visualise, better, and world. And he said, choose one instead of all. I received good feedbacks for me. Certainly, enlarging and emphasizing letters is something anyone can do, and it's not an idea.
After class, I create a new layout that I made use of the feedback from the teacher.

Fig2.6; feedback 2

Also, space have some problems. A block of four letters is rising up like a staircase. Come to think of it, it's very hard to read and doesn't look very good. This also needs improvement.

I decided to devise only the word world. Make a specialize design what I want to convey the most.
I likened the o of the world to the earth and replaced it with a black circle.

I also changed the blank space and layout so that it looks beautiful overall. I'm not sure if this layout is good, but I think it is better than the first one.

Feedback

Week7

General Feedback: Pay attention to the space. Emphasis on something is not an idea.

Specific Feedback: Allow, world, and better, decide emphasizing one from three. The world becomes a little bit stronger. Just one, a black circle used by the world word. Black space is also no idea. No.3 layout is good but word layout is not an idea, just emphasis.

Reflection

Experience

This task was like an application of what I had learned so far. It was a little difficult to come up with a good idea this time as well, but I think I was able to make use of what I learned last time. I'm glad I got used to InDesign a little. I thought it would be fun to imagine something from text and express it in letters and shapes.

Observations

Looking at the work of my classmates when we get feedback, it's simple but amazing! I had some ideas that I thought. I just felt that complicated designs were not the only good thing. I think I have a habit of packing elements into one design work. I would like to improve that.

Findings

About findings, I think that my experience will be important when designing things. I wanted to increase the number of idea banks in my daily life. For that reason, I thought about investigating various reference works. So, I think the Future reading part will be a good opportunity.

< About layout >

Any kind of publication has different layout requirements.

Most publications are composed of text, images and captions and the task of the designer is to sift through the images to select those which best portray the essence of the content and possess the quality of becoming an icon. An icon is an image that expresses its content in the most memorable way.

Fig3.2: some layouts

◎ Once again, in designing any kind of publication the most helpful device is the grid.

1. Once the outside margins are established (I tend to like narrow margins to increase the tension) the basic grid should be devised according to the nature of the publication: 2, 3, or 4 columns for a book or a brochure, 6 or more, for a newspaper.

2. Once the number of vertical divisions are decided the next step is horizontal divisions which will provide the number of modules per page.

→ Again 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or more, according to the variety need of the publication.

◎ In defining the grid, one has to keep in mind what kind of visual material will comprise the layout.

Fig3.3 layout sample

For square pictures a square grid may be better than a rectangular one, well suited for rectangular images. Or, if the publication has a consistent variety of the two formats, one could design a double grid accommodating both situations.

It is important to remember that many devices are available to make layouts exciting.

Outlined images, line drawings, and bold initials, can add sparks to the page as a variety
of other devices. The grid is a very useful tool to guarantee results.

Fig3.4: layout sample

Ultimately the most important device is the management of the white space in the layouts. It is the white space that makes the layout sing.

Bad layouts have no space left for breathing - every little space covered by a cacophony of type-sizes, images, and screaming titles. Every detail is important to achieve the final look of a publication.
