Design Principles: Exercise

Class activity

I thought of a monogram using the alphabet "R". R was a little difficult because It has a carve. The R in the upper right is the image of a character. The lower left R is a combination of three shapes


Exercise 

Movement - Movement is the path the viewer's eye takes thought the work of art, often to focal areas.


First, I choose topic of repetition. I like this disney character, and I would like to use it. When I draw sketch, It was a little difficult to express hunny movement by drawing, so I prepare water splash sample.

I draw two sketches. I I did not know which one to pick, but the stick looked more powerful than the lid, so I chose the right one. And If there are hunny stick, I thought it would look more honey.

The honey color is not only orange but also add some different yellow colors to express the gradation. Then use white color to express the highlights of honey.

Finally, I though background color. I tried blue, black, green and purple, and then I realized green was the best color. I made it into a sprite pattern. And each one has a different width.

Finally, I added the gradation and shadow of the honey stick to express the three-dimensional effect of the honey.






Feedback 1

Dr Charles said, it use a lot of curve line, and it has a balance between figure ground. And background green line is interesting. The background and curve line were creative parts, so I was happy to receive compliments. Also, I'm glad he said the honey flowing, hunny moving down part in the upper part is good.

In this exercise, I choose the topic of repetition. First of all, I thought the main image. I was thinking about which I will choose that an animal or a fruit, but I decided on a lemon that was easy to understand frame at a glance.

It is difficult to draw a circle by hand, so I put a sample. And I plan to devise the color of the work. In addition to the original lemon color, add various colors.

Feedback 2 

Dr. Charles said you can add a little bit more texture and color. Then, a variety of textures get very fun to look at. He gave me an example. Instead of it, the green background against pink lemon, kinds of a green pattern or a purple different pattern. You can explain with bright lemon color against texture background. 

I got very good feedback from the teacher. When I was seeing classmates' work, I thought my work was uninteresting. Other classmates' works were interesting, very and creative. My artwork without ingenuity that can make robots, so Dr. Charles told me that don't need to change it, however, I thought I would try more ingenuity to make art that adds more texture and color.

I draw 2 sketches. The sketch on the right is different in size of lemon and arrangement. Right one is more interesting than left one, so I choose right one. 

I thought of three colors pattern : one, two, and alternating two colors pattern. I put the original lemon color in the middle. Besides lemons, I imaged oranges and grapefruit. Lastly, I thought some background that images 'lemon sour', but When I put the background in, it looked messy, so I removed it.

If I lose the background, it looks a little unsatisfactory, but I think it is the best way to emphasize each lemon.

Class Activity

I did a class activity that draw a picture while listening to music without lyrics and use simple design elements such as line, dots, triangle and rectangle or other sharps. I've never done this, so I thought it was a little bit difficult but after this, I felt it was a very interesting activity.

Firstly, when I listened to music, I imaged universe. And this song title was 'dream dust' so I thought I would like to draw a girl who sleeping and watching universe dream. I expressed universe that I use circles, triangles, dots, and lines. Dr Charles said it was a very interesting concept.

The next art is the night sky and sea. When I listened to music, I heard a woman's voice that was a little sad. Then, I imaged the night and blue color. I draw the sea and sky at night. So that everyone can understand it is the sky at a glance, I use a dot to star.

I did not check this song title in the class. So I was surprised when I started to write this blog area, I checked this song title on the class recording. Because the title is 'future horizon'. I happened to draw the horizon of the sea. Dr Charles said it is beautiful blue gradation. The stars in the sky are also nice. The horizon is also well represented.


Reflection 

In week1 and week2, I learned a lot of things about design. I have known for the first time about design names such as repetition, unity, emphasis... Learning design principles are a very important thing. And it becomes a design foundation so that make own artwork from now on. Also, I took a lot of inspiration from classmates. There were many creative works. 

I have some reflections on the exercise. I made work using repetition.It was very simple and uninteresting. Not interesting is a big challenge in designing and sketching. I need to soften my head a little more. 
And about work using movement, I feel like I've done well to imagine my idea. But It would be better to do more ingenuity of background. I thought it was important to think about designs that utilize individuality, not designs that everyone could think of. Also, I realized that it is hard to express own image in a short time. When I did a class activity that make work while listening to music, there were times about 7 minutes. In the 7 minutes, I did to make my work, but it had not enough quality. So I think that the speed of thinking and shaping are also important.
 I wanted to have various experiences to accumulate design ideas.

  1. Very Good! The first work has the right selection of shapes and colours to evoke the sense of flow and fluidity. you have made some good judgements in the compositionof the shapes and well balanced.

  2. The second work shows how you were experimenting with pop-art repetition. the lemons could have been maintained as a grid based layout. But instead you experimented with unconventional and overlapping repetition with variety. but it has potential for added avriety to add more originality!
